Denmark encourages innovation and entrepreneurship, and as a Citizen of the EU, EEA countries, or Switzerland, you can live in or start a business in Denmark, only if you don’t plan on staying for more than 3 months.

If you anticipate that your stay in Denmark will last more than 3 months, you are required to apply for an EU residence document before the three months have expired.

But if you are a job seeker you can stay for up to 6 months, starting from the day of entry, before you have to register.

A European Union residence document is your indication that as an EU citizen, or as a family member of an EU citizen, you have the liberty to reside in Denmark.

What rights do a European Union residence document give?

A European Union residence document gives you the right to reside, work, or study in Denmark

In Denmark, you will, however, in several circumstances require a Civil Registration System (CPR) number. You must present your EU residence document to your city of residence to be given a CPR number (and health insurance card and the like).

You can get a residence document if you are a:

  • worker
  • self-employed individual
  • student
  • have adequate resources
  • family member

Danish Permanent Residency

The Danish long-term residence permit is a permanent residence title to live in Denmark. Permanent residence indicates that an individual is allowed to stay in Denmark and doesn’t need to apply for residence again.

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens have the liberty to apply for permanent residency when they have lived in Denmark for a minimum of five consecutive years. Once the permit is granted, the holder can live in Denmark without having to meet the original requirements of their temporary EU residency.

Non-EU citizens can be given permanent residence once they have had a temporary residence permit for eight uninterrupted years, but in some cases, four.

Advantages of Being a Permanent Resident in Denmark

As a permanent resident in Denmark, you have a few advantages besides being able to live in Denmark indefinitely.

  • You can sponsor relatives who meet the eligibility standards to live in the country.
  • You can purchase property and real estate.
  • Kids of permanent residents are entitled to free upper education.
  • You might receive grants and aids.
