After a heated campaign that saw two rivals on opposite sides of the political spectrum compete directly against each other, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won the election against Jair Bolsonaro and staged a comeback to Brazil’s political power.
Since the announcement, congratulations have been coming in from leaders around the world, with at least 93 countries verifying on social networks or official telegrams the victory of Lula in the Brazilian election, including the United States President, Joe Biden, who remarked that the result came following free and fair elections. He added he was looking forward to continuing cooperation with Brazil.
Congratulations come from dozen of authorities all over the world who recognize and congratulate Lula as Brazil‘s new President.
Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, who just won her elections in Italy went to social networks to congratulate Lula.
All the BRICS countries also gestured in the same direction, including the president of Russia, another BRICS member, who expressed hope for the further improvement of the Russian-Brazilian alliance.
Recognizing the result of the polls was Saudi Arabia, the government of the United Arab Emirates, and ultra-conservative countries such as Hungary and Poland, who did not balk to greet Lula’s victory.
International entities, such as the Organization of American States, the UN, and the European Union also expressed themselves.
Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, congratulated Lula saying he looked forward to working with him on issues that are significant to both of their countries.
China’s leader, Xi Jinping, also congratulated Lula wishing the country “new successes”.
Congratulations also come from Argentina President, Alberto Fernandez who declared the election result opens a new era in the history of Latin America.
On his part, Nigerian President, Buhari congratulated Lula da Silva for winning a hard-fought election.
This ample recognition did not occur by chance.
In Brazil, Bolsonaro had cast skepticism on the voting process which lead up to a heated election after he insinuated he might dismiss the outcome if he lost. Although there was no immediate comment from him, two of his close political allies, seemed to acknowledge that Bolsonaro had lost.
This victory was possibly the most stunning in Luiz Inacio Lula da political career.
