The APEC forum and its purpose for Hong Kong
John Lee Ka-Chiu, Hong Kong’s leader will lead a 20-strong delegation, consisting of banking, financial, and commerce specialists, as well as networking professionals, to woo foreign businesses on his first trip to Thailand as chief executive to attend an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
He vowed to rally more regional support for Hong Kong to join an influential regional trade pact. He also asserted he will try and get more businesses to set up headquarters in Hong Kong.
Lee will be in Bangkok for four days, and during those four days, he will seek countries’ support for Hong Kong to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the world’s largest free-trade deal, in an effort to boost the city’s economy.
He also said he’s optimistic that Hong Kong would make a good contribution to the free-trade agreement, with Hong Kong ideally situated to serve as a bridge between mainland China and the rest of the world.
During his absence, Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki will be acting chief executive.
Also, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau Ying-wah, will depart for Bangkok to attend the APEC ministerial meeting.
This forum is part of a wider campaign to draw both businesses and tourists back to Hong Kong, following the years of inconvenience caused by the pandemic.
