The 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly referred to as Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, or COP27 is currently being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. It kicked off on Sunday, Nov. 6, and will run until November 18. This summit has gathered government officials and representatives from all over the world to discuss ways to tackle climate change.
Over 100 world leaders visited Sharm el-Sheikh at the start of this UN’s annual climate talks. The main purpose of the conference is to ensure the entire implementation of the “2015 Paris Agreement”, through which countries agreed to try to reduce global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial limits.
This COP27 was also referred to as kind of a pact and this pact would see to the following:
- see all countries taking additional efforts to reduce emissions,
- see to wealthier nations and multinational financial institutions assisting emerging economies,
- ending reliance on fossil fuels and the building of coals,
- providing sustainable energy for all, and
- unifying to combine strategy and abilities for the benefit of humankind.
Across the two weeks of this COP27, some more topics we can expect to see discussed are:
- Environment and biodiversity
- Solar infrastructure around the world and
- Energy security
With respect to Energy:
Wind industry organizations and turbine makers have issued demands for faster-permitting processes, as well as urgency in decarbonizing and higher overall ambition from the COP27 climate summit.
Wind turbine giant Vestas called for faster-authorizing processes to ensure renewables deployment keeps pace with what is needed under the Paris Agreement. Meanwhile, rival turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa accentuated the need for collaboration between regions, countries, and the public and private sectors at COP27.
At the beginning of the climate summit, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for the world to work hand-in-hand to combat climate change.
The summit is still underway but we are certain there will be much more progress by the time it ends.
